The Definition of Myopia and Diagnostic Criteria

In 2015, the Myopia Society Japan determined the definition of myopia after consulting with our sponsors. Its diagnostic criteria are as follows.

Definition of Myopia

A refractive state of an uncorrected eye where parallel rays meet the eye in front of the retina.
It is an ailment when combined with vision loss. It is necessary to treat myopia and prevent its progression.

Diagnostic Criteria for Myopia

Myopia
Spherical equivalent value is greater than -0.5 diopters.
High Myopia
Spherical equivalent value is greater than -6.0 diopters or there is an
axial length of more than 26.0 mm.
